< PROJECTS BY MICKAEL DE OLIVEIRA
Mickaël de Oliveira’s theatre is particularly attracted to the clash of different ideas, theses and antitheses, as well as the reinvention of their respective syntheses. In Sweet 15, the Portuguese playwright invited his Brazilian counterpart Diego Bagagal to create a theatre piece that proposes a reflection on the dynamics and repercussions of contemporary neocolonialist practices.
A wealthy Portuguese family adopts a Brazilian youth of indigenous descent and decides to throw a Quinceañera, aimed to introduce the new sibling to the Portuguese high society, which will end up tainted by horror and tragedy. Interweaving public and private spheres, Sweet 15 investigates the aftermath of colonization, its moral heritage, and the fetichization of minorities, revealing how difficult it is to come up with “syntheses that console and liberate us as individuals and communities.” In this allegory inspired by horror and gore cinema, Mickaël de Oliveira deepens the work he began developing in Socrates Must Die (2018).
