OUR REVOLUTION(S)

2015 – 2016
MICKAEL DE OLIVEIRA E ULRIKE SYHA

Here and now, four actors of three different nationalities - German, French and Portuguese - talk about their memories of revolution and the possibility of a revolution today. How could it happen? What would its mottos be? This small community investigates the collective imaginary around past revolutions. The political concepts tied to the personal story of each performer slowly become untranslatable on stage.

“Our” imaginary revolution is built from anecdotes from different eras and geographies. Slowly, fiction contaminates reality: onstage, the performers plan to draft a document that encapsulates a new revolutionary ideology while a disturbing uprising seems to rage outside and nobody knows who the protesters are.

Several questions are raised by who plays the “game” (the performers) and by who watches the “game” (the audience): are violence and terror inevitable? Does revolution always become a disappointment? What’s the legacy of revolution? What’s its folklore, or kitsch? Why have we came to believe, as Sophie Wahnich asks, since 1989, that utopia and the desire for a better life lead us to totalitarianism? How can we create irreversibility in our day and age?
