TEOREMA

2014
JOHN ROMÃO

The decline of the sacred in contemporary times inaugurates the search for new relationships with the real. To declare an object as an enigma where the sacred is in imminent explosion is to draw attention to its uniqueness and the mystery of its existence. With 12 skateboarders and 1 accordionist on stage who plays the "Et exspecto" by contemporary composer Sofia Gubaidulina (known as the creator of Poor Music), John Romão creates a show where the word is supplanted by an enigmatic and iconographic experience of visuals and sound, both elegiac and apocalyptic. Teorema is inspired by a fundamental piece of European cinema, the film (and text) of the same title by Pier Paolo Pasolini, so as to be a reflection on the staging of the author's death.

Following the steps of Pasolini, who exalted the popular sense of the sacred with popular figures, often marginals from urban or rural proletariat, today John Romão carries to the stage a group of performers who also belong to the street, but in a contemporary context: young skateboarders, other kind of "ragazzi di vita", vehicles that promote the encounter with the sacred in their own body. The relationships between them are about tension, domination, and submission, as they are conveyed by an erotic and sacred ambience, well-known to Pasolini.

This is the second show of a trilogy that John Romão dedicates to Pasolini in 2015, 40 years after his death.
